Memory foam was developed in 1966 by NASA to improve the safety of aircraft cushions. It has since been used to make some of the most comfortable mattresses that exist. Because a memory foam mattress is often denser than other mattresses, it is more supportive than its alternatives. This, combined with the comfort of the foam, makes memory foam mattresses an excellent middle-ground between the comfort of a soft mattress and the solidity of a firm mattress.
The way a memory-foam-mattress feels depends on both its indentation force deflection (IFD) as well as its density. A memory foam mattress’s indentation force deflection rating is the force required to make a one-inch dent in a 15” x 15” x 4” sample of the foam by an 8” diameter disk. IFD ratings range from extremely soft to very firm. IFD in and of itself is not sufficient to measure the softness of memory foam, however, as the density is also often very important (in fact, in many cases, the density is even more important than the IFD rating).
There are very few downsides to using a memory foam mattress. One of the main downsides is the cost: memory foam was initially far too expensive for most people to afford. Recently, however, it has become far cheaper. Memory foam mattresses are, on average, still more expensive than traditional mattresses, though they are quickly becoming more affordable. In addition to this, some memory foams have a chemical odour which some people may find unpleasant. Though this usually goes away with airing, some people still dislike it. Also, memory foam is often more easily combustible than other foam. Finally, memory foam is NOT recommended for babies and small children, as it can be more difficult to turn in and small children may suffocate.
